IMG_8729b * The church was built on the site of a 4th century Roman temple, a square edifice known as the 'oldest cathedral' and commissioned by Maternus, the first Christian bishop of Cologne.

CRW_8736b * On the plaza is the Roman museum. Cologne became acknowledged as a city by the Romans in 50 CE by the name of Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium. From 260 to 271 Cologne was the capital of the Gallic Empire

CRW_8735b * The floor is from a Roman building which was located here.

IMG_8720 * At its completion in 1880, the Cologne cathedral was the world's tallest building

CRW_8722b * As expected, the nave at 43m makes for a spectacular site.

IMG_1393 * the Sarcophagus of the Magi, a large gilded sarcophagus dating from the 13th century, and the largest reliquary in the Western world. It is thought to hold the remains of the Three Wise Men, whose bones and 2000 years old clothes were discovered at the opening of the shrine in 1864.

CRW_8745b * A sight I remember from my 1957 visit is this statue decorated with jewels given by the congregation of the church.
